Why You Need a Meditation Teacher

Have you found yourself struggling with meditation or you haven’t started the journey because you just don’t know how to get started?

Maybe you've tried different techniques, apps, or classes, but still can't seem to find your groove.

Or maybe you've experienced the benefits of meditation, but struggle to maintain a consistent practice.

If so, you're not alone, this is very common. The good news is, there are remedies!

With a personal meditation teacher, you can cut this learning curve in half and have someone holding you accountability and guiding you along.

Getting started with meditation and actually sticking to it with solid practice is a definite feat.

It is a journey inward and not everyone is willing to take that journey.

It requires discipline, thoughtfulness, reflectiveness on our lives, and the ability to make the habit stick for good.

Wow, that is quite the task!

But actually, it is the most rewarding thing you can add to your life. Really. And it can be easy and even joyful to start a meditation practice that just continues for the rest of your life.

Bringing you inner treasures of inner peace, contemplation, and quietude during stressful times.

When I first started meditating, I felt lost and unsure of what I was doing. It wasn't until I found a personal meditation teacher that everything clicked into place.

With my teacher’s guidance, I was able to develop a deeper understanding of meditation and experience the life-changing benefits it has to offer.

Now, as a meditation coach myself, I often hear from people who are experiencing similar struggles. They're unsure of where to start or how to deepen their practice, and they're feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of information out there.

That's why I believe that everyone could benefit from working with a personal meditation teacher.

In this blog post, I'll share with you why having a meditation teacher or coach can make all the difference in your practice.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned meditator, working with a teacher can help you overcome obstacles, deepen your practice, and experience the profound benefits of meditation in a way that is tailored to your unique needs and goals.

So, let's dive in!

Why Having a Personal Meditation Teacher is Important

Having a personal meditation teacher or coach can help you navigate the ups and downs of your meditation practice. I know this from personal experience.

When I first started meditating, I struggled to make it a consistent habit. I would meditate for a few days, maybe a week, and then fall off the wagon.

I found it difficult to quiet my mind, and often felt like I wasn't doing it "right."

But when I found my teacher, everything changed. I had someone who could guide me through the process, answer my questions, and help me stay accountable.

With their support, I was able to establish a regular meditation practice and experience all the benefits that come with it.

A meditation teacher can also help you personalize your practice. There are countless meditation techniques out there, and not all of them will resonate with you.

A good teacher will work with you to identify which techniques work best for you and help you create a customized meditation practice that meets your specific needs and goals.

They can also help you refine your technique, so you can get the most out of each session.

Benefits of Meditation

Before we go any further with discussing the need for a meditation teacher, I wanted to quickly discuss the amazing benefits of meditation.

Meditation is a powerful tool that can help you improve your mental and physical health. Through my personal experience and working with many clients, I have seen firsthand how meditation can transform lives. Some of the benefits of regular meditation include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Meditation can help you calm your mind and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. It allows you to focus on the present moment and let go of worries and fears about the future or the past.

  • Improved focus and concentration: Regular meditation can help you increase your ability to focus and concentrate. This can be particularly helpful for people who struggle with distractions or have difficulty staying focused for long periods of time.

  • Increased self-awareness: Meditation can help you develop a greater sense of self-awareness, which can be helpful in identifying and managing negative thoughts and emotions. It can also help you develop a deeper understanding of your own thought patterns and behaviors.

  • Better sleep: Meditation can help you relax your body and mind, which can lead to better sleep. This can be particularly helpful for people who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

  • Improved overall well-being: Regular meditation can have a positive impact on your overall well-being, including your mood, relationships, and sense of purpose.

By working with a meditation coach, you can develop a personalized meditation practice that is tailored to your specific needs and goals.

A coach can also provide guidance and support as you work through any challenges or obstacles that arise in your practice.

Different Kinds of Meditation Teachers and Methods.

Meditation teachers come in different shapes and sizes, each with their own unique approaches and teaching styles. Some prefer teaching in group settings, while others offer online or personal one-on-one sessions.

Some do not offer a variety of techniques but only one way to meditate, so if that is important to you, look into that.

Also, research and ask them about their own personal practice. I am a firm believer that teaching meditation is one of those things you need to be doing on your own, for many years, before you start teaching others.

Otherwise, you can have the ignorant leading the ignorant scenario. I have seen this and it is more common than it should be.

Why is this so important?

Because we are working with our minds during meditation.

Meditation is done with the mind, not the body. The mind is an intricate machine that has to be systematically and correctly trained during meditation. It is our most powerful tool, so it must be treated correctly when we are allowing someone to interact with us on this important level.

Also, inquire which techniques they use, if they are just going to have you meditate with an app or a guided audio track all of the time, I would not invest in this.

Why?

We need to form the habit so that we can meditate anywhere at any time without more sensory distractions. We should not have to be dependent on a device to help us meditate.

Think about it, what we are really doing is trying to calm the senses and go inwards with meditation. Hence the ancient ways of meditation always suggested meditation in a quiet place, undisturbed. We have to turn away from the senses to fully concentrate and go inward.

Advantages of Having a Meditation Teacher

One of the biggest advantages of having a personal meditation teacher is that they can tailor the practice to your specific needs and goals.

They can assess your current level of experience and create a personalized plan to help you progress in your practice. They can also provide you with customized feedback and guidance to help you overcome any challenges you may encounter.

In a one-on-one session, you have the undivided attention of your meditation teacher, which can help you to stay focused and accountable.

Additionally, having a personal meditation teacher can provide a sense of community and support that can be beneficial for your practice.

You will feel more motivated to continue your meditation practice with the encouragement and accountability of a teacher. This can be particularly helpful if you struggle with consistency in your practice or feel intimidated by group settings.

I also like to give my students and clients additional educational information on meditation. Educate them on the different techniques, the science of the mind, and the science and importance of habits.

I also provide reflection worksheets, journals, and logs so that they can keep a sort of running diary and accountability to keep motivated. This is very powerful!

What Makes a Good Meditation Teacher?

A good meditation teacher is not just someone who teaches you how to meditate, but someone who guides you through your transformation and helps you along your journey.

As I mentioned previously, they should be doing their own practice for many years before they have decided to teach others. This is not something that you should take lightly. Vet their experience just as you would any other health or wellness coach.

Ask them where they learned and if they are certified. There are several schools of certification for meditation but it is not a federally regulated certification system.

They should be someone who you feel comfortable with and who understands your unique needs and challenges.

  • A personal meditation teacher can provide one-on-one attention and customized guidance to help you overcome any obstacles that may arise on your meditation journey.

  • Furthermore, a meditation teacher can help you develop a consistent meditation practice that fits your lifestyle and preferences.

  • They can offer insights and techniques that are tailored to your specific needs, whether it's helping you manage stress, improve focus, or cultivate mindfulness.

  • With a personal meditation teacher, you can receive ongoing support and accountability to help you stay motivated and committed to your practice.

A meditation coach or teacher can be a valuable investment in your overall well-being and personal growth.
